Thermopiles are thermosyphons that carry a structural load and maintain permafrost soils.

Thermopiles lower the frozen soil temperature thus increasing the ad-freeze and compressive strengths of the soil.

Warming permafrost may cause existing conventional ad-freeze piles to fail.

Thermopiles  are widely used in Alaska.
