Hybrid thermosyphons are designed to be cooled actively as well as passively. Active cooling means that mechanical refrigeration is coupled to the thermosyphon by means of a heat exchanger. All of the thermosyphons manufactured by AFCI can be built as hybrid units with the addition of an internal heat exchanger.

A hybrid unit does not have to be actively cooled. When the air temperatures become cold, heat is transfered to the air and the mechanical unit shuts down. A typical application for hybrid thermosyphons is to accelerate construction on a project by active freezing during the summer.
